Alabamas storhetstid var 1958 - 1982 då Paul "Bear" Bryant var coach. "Bear" Bryant vann 232 matcher, förlorade 46 och vann 6 mästerskap under sina 25 år som coach för Alabama.

Smeknamnet "Bear" fick han i college när han brottades mot en björn.

Han dog i hjärtinfarkt 26 dagar senare 69 år senare.
